Casa Piani Children’s Library

The juvenile section of Imola public library is located in the old centre of the city near the San Francesco complex, home of the renewed public library.

The elegant three-floor building from the 18th century that hosts the juvenile library was donated by the Piani family from Imola to the Municipality in 1965. After being carefully renovated, the new seat was inaugurated on 20 January 1990 with the name of Casa Piani. The play area on the ground floor of the building was also opened at the same time.

The recognisability of the building, the pleasantness of its surroundings, the organization of the spaces and the richness of the decorations all contributed in giving it a strong civic identity.
The Juvenile section was already present in 1961 under the name of Biblioteca Giardino and it was housed inside the rooms of the Public library.

Biblioteca Giardino for young people had approximately 9,000 volumes, which are the historical heritage of the Childrens library.

Cassa di Risparmio Palace

This elegant building occupies almost the entire block of the first part of via Cavour west. It’s the work of Giuseppe Baccini and was enlarged in 1919-1920.
The facade is decorated with large medallions between the gables of the windows carrying inscriptions: the first six were dictated by the poet Carducci, the remaining by Luigi Paolini who was director there between 1885 and 1925.

Today it is the seat of the Banca Popolare Italiana in Imola.

Caterina Sforza

She was the young bride of Girolamo Riario, future lord of Imola and Forlì, and the legitimate daughter of Galeazzo Maria Sforza, Duke of Milan, born out of wedlock.
Caterina arrived in Imola for the first time 1st May 1477 and was welcomed with a great celebration. Here, at the age of 14 begins her long political career, which, mixed with legend, tells us the story of an audacious and passionate woman.

In 1488 Girolamo Riario was murdered, after having ruled during the prosperous era of the Renaissance. The years that followed were very tormented for Caterina who ruled alone, while fighting against conspiracies and murders, passionate love stories and new weddings, while still keeping control over Imola and Forlì, until she had to surrender to the troops of Cesare Borgia. This was her decline which led her to imprisonment and finally to a solitary life of isolation.

Her story has always been one of the most fascinating , and she has been portrayed as a strong, vigorous and independent woman and an expert of medicine as well as cosmetics which she herself prepared and experimented.

Central Gallery

It was built at the end of the 1930’s, in the place of the old fruit and vegetable market.

It is made up by a large gallery, designed by the roman architect Milani, and by a large red brick building created by Adriano Marabini from Imola.

This gallery connects via Emilia and Piazza Gramsci and also hosts some shops and occasionally cultural events.

The House of Fascio is dominated by a large square tower, which is vertically situated on the corner of the entrance. On each side of this tower are two sculptured columns, by Amleto Beghelli, representing various sports.
